Roses and chocolates are great and all, but who wants a crummy old rose for Valentine’s Day when you could be living it up in one of the most romantic cities in the world?
Need some Valentine’s Day inspiration? Check out our top 5 contenders for the title of the most romantic city.
1. Paris, France
We know it’s a cliché, but Paris hasn’t been dubbed the ‘City of Love’ for no reason. It really is actually romantic AF.
There’s nothing sweeter than buttery pastries, strolls along cobblestone streets and picnics in Tuileries Garden. Well, except maybe a glass of wine on the lawn by a twinkling Eiffel Tower or the endless corridors of the Louvre.
If you’re looking for a romantic getaway straight out of the pages of a picture book, you can’t look past Paris.
2. Bruges, Belgium
One loved-up couple + a dash of Old World European charm = the recipe for a spine-tingling good Valentine’s Day in Belgium.
Where does this fairy tale romance take place? A 13th century village with medieval streets, misty canals and Gothic architecture seems like as good a place as any.
When you’re surrounded by Belgian waffles covered in powdered sugar, dozens of different chocolate shops and vast collections of Flemish artworks, your mind will be on nothing but romance (providing you survive the sugar coma).
3. Rome, Italy
Imagine it’s the ‘50s and you’re on your very own version of Roman Holiday. Every couple deserves a Roman escapade that rivals the likes of Audrey Hepburn and the devilishly handsome Gregory Peck at least once in their lifetime. Oh, and if you haven’t seen the movie we’re on about – hop to it 😉
What better way to spend Valentine’s Day than admiring art at the Borghese Gallery, staring in awe at the Sistine Chapel or making a wish at the Trevi Fountain in Rome?
Do we hear wedding bells?
4. Istanbul, Turkey
Istanbul and passion go hand in hand. Exotic tastes and aromas will envelop your senses, while the historical marvels will make your inner history buff jump up and down with excitement.
Gaze out at the Bosphorus Strait (the waterway separating Europe and Asia) and travel the streets of Buyukada in a horse drawn carriage. Then, for the perfect finish to a perfect day, watch the sunset from the Golden Horn.
5. Venice, Italy
If it’s romance you’re after, Italy is the country that keeps on giving. Boasting gondola rides, sexy Italian accents and mouth-watering cuisine that puts your Grandma’s cooking to shame, Venice is the ideal setting for an epic love story.
And that love story could easily be yours. Be sure to make the most of early mornings and later in the evenings to avoid the V Day crowds. Gondola rides/yummy dinners/romantic strolls along secret pathways, get them in early so that you can savour the moment all for yourselves. Deffo one to round off our romantic cities list.
So, for a Valentine’s Day that’s far from ordinary, a foray in a foreign city is just what Cupid ordered.
