1. Prague – Czech Republic

Ah Prague, stealing hearts one traveller at a time. Winter means less tourists, which also means more time to take a stroll along Charles Bridge, see the John Lennon Wall, explore Prague Castle and hang around the Old Town Square. Winning!

Also: Christmas markets! A giant Christmas tree, chestnuts roasting on an open fire, the smell of mulled wine and stalls that put Santa’s workshop to shame, Prague is b-e-a-utiful at Christmas.

2. Lake Bled – Slovenia

You’ll feel like you’ve walked straight into a fairytale when you get to Lake Bled. Especially in winter. This place is probably one of the most Instagrammable locations in Eastern Europe, and for good reason.

Featuring a quaint church, a medieval castle and some snow-capped mountains in the background, Lake Bled will be sure to take your breath away.  There’s also lots of hiking and exploring to get involved with too. If you’re lucky, you might even see the lake when it’s frozen over. Eek!

3. Lauterbrunnen – Switzerland

Lauterbrunnen is so magical all year round. But during winter, it’s taken to the next level. The place screams ski resort vibes with its cute wooden cabins and houses as well as the towering mountains providing an amazing backdrop.

Want some even more incred views? Hop on the Jungfrau Railway which takes you to ‘The Top of Europe’. You’ll reach 3454 metres above sea level and look out over glaciers, mountains and views that’ll stick with you forever.

4. Budapest – Hungary

Your house in Budapest awaits. Get your walking shoes on and you can check out Hero’s Square, Parliament House and the National Palace for some epic sightseeing. You can also can hang with the hipsters and enjoy the local ruin bars.

Plus, sparkling lights at the Christmas markets will be sure to lure you in. There’s one right by the Basilica which’ll give you all the Christmas feels. Also, you could try the Szechenyi Thermal Bath. It’s a must-do experience in the winter here.

5. Edinburgh – Scotland

Edinburgh is achingly pretty at all times of the year. But during winter, the city’s medieval Old Town and Edinburgh Castle become even more postcard-perfect.

Wanna crank things up a notch? Stick around when the Hogmanay New Year’s celebrations go down. There’s a street party to rival all street parties, live bands and one of the world’s most spectacular fireworks displays. Add traditional dancing and kilts and you’re onto a winner.
