With Halloween just around the corner, we’ve rounded up some of the most haunted places in Europe (and thrown in some others just for fun).
Sure, Europe’s beautiful with its stunning beaches, trendy cities and awesome landscapes. But what about when it comes to the spooky and the paranormal? Europe’s not short on that kinda stuff either. Come take a look at 5 of our fave spooky locations in Europe.
Did you just tap my shoulder?
1. Edinburgh – Scotland, United Kingdom
Creepy factor: 🎃🎃🎃🎃_
From cold underground vaults to laneways of the Old Town, looming Edinburgh Castle to spine-chilling graveyards, Edinburgh can be pretty spooky and definitely deserves its place on our most haunted places in Europe list.
Explore the city and get lost among the Gothic and Medieval architecture. You’ll find yourself snapping away because it’s so atmospheric here. Keep a close eye on your pictures though… is that a creepy shadow in the background?

2. Catacombs of Paris – Paris, France
Creepy factor: 🎃🎃🎃🎃🎃
Ever get the feeling someone’s watching you? You definitely will in the Catacombs of Paris. Forming a labyrinth beneath the city, they contain the remains of millions of Parisians. Not one for the faint-hearted.
With dark passages and galleries to get lost in, you can go to the Catacombs to explore ‘the realm of Death’ and take the time to reflect. Or, you know, cling on to your mates in fear.
Wanna check it out for yourself? Come on one of our trips that travels through Paris.
3. Bran Castle – Bran, Romania
Throughout the world, Bran Castle is associated with the fictitious home of Count Dracula, the vampire from Bram Stoker’s famous gothic novel “Dracula”. Even though there’s debate surrounding how much Stoker even knew about the Castle when he was writing the novel, the Castle still firmly holds its place as mysterious and shrouded in legend.
You can visit the Castle and find out about the myth that surrounds it as well as the historic reality of the place (which includes trade, customs, a Queen, a Princess and loads more).
Ready to feel those chills? You can check out the Castle on this trip with Topdeck.
4. Akershus Fortress – Oslo, Norway
Creepy factor: 🎃🎃🎃🎃_
Built to protect Oslo, Akershus Fortress (Akershus Castle) is a medieval castle that’s been used as a palace, royal residence and a prison over time. It’s also known as one of Norway’s most haunted places. Eeek!
With reports of a ghostly guard dog, a faceless figure of a woman, screams, whisperings and more, this definitely makes our list of the most haunted places in Europe.

5. Tivoli Gardens – Copenhagen, Denmark
Creepy factor: 🎃_ _ _ _
Definitely not as haunted as the others (if at all!) but perhaps that’s all the more reason to go explore the Tivoli Gardens during their Halloween celebrations! The Tivoli Gardens is the second-oldest operating amusement park in the world and has its home in the beautiful Copenhagen, Denmark.
Expect spooky stalls selling everything from crafts to costumes, a parade of creepy monsters and more than 20,000 pumpkins. Wow!
